Copy ChatGPT to Google Docs with formatting

Google Docs is the easiest place to take a ChatGPT answer, because Docs can read the symbols ChatGPT writes in. One right-click turns **bold** into bold and ## Heading into a heading. From there you can download a Word file or a PDF. Here are the four things Docs can do and when to use each.

The ordinary paste

Select the answer in the chat window with your mouse, copy, and paste into your document with Ctrl+V. Most of the time the headings, bold and lists come through, because the copy carries a formatted version of the text. The one thing to watch is the look: the paste can bring ChatGPT's font and spacing with it. Select everything and set the font and size from the toolbar, or use the next method, which never brings any styling along.

If you see the symbols after pasting, you were given the plain version. Undo (Ctrl+Z) and use Paste from Markdown.

Paste from Markdown, for text with symbols

Right-click where the text should go and choose Paste from Markdown. Google's help page on markdown in Docs lists it as a right-click option alongside Copy as Markdown. Docs converts the symbols as it pastes: bold, italics, strikethrough, links and headings 1 to 6 are all on Google's list. The result uses your document's own styles, so nothing needs re-fonting.

This works on text from anywhere, not only ChatGPT: a Claude answer, a Copilot answer, the contents of a .md file opened in Notepad or TextEdit.

Prefer no formatting at all? Paste with Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac), which is Docs' shortcut for paste without formatting, and strip the symbols with Edit > Find and replace. Our asterisk guide has the exact search terms.

Enable Markdown, for typing

Under Tools > Preferences there is a box, Enable Markdown. With it ticked, symbols you type convert as you go: type **like this** and Docs makes it bold, type # at the start of a line and you get a heading. Useful if you often type short bits of markdown by hand. It does not change how pasting works; for pasted text use Paste from Markdown.

Tables

A table selected in the chat window pastes into Docs as a real table. If you have the version made of vertical bars and dashes, Google's markdown list does not include tables, so Paste from Markdown will not build one. Go through Sheets instead: paste the lines into Google Sheets, choose Data > Split text to columns, pick Custom from the separator menu and type a vertical bar. Delete the row of dashes and the empty first and last columns, then copy the cells and paste them into Docs. The table guide has pictures of each step.

A .md file from ChatGPT or Claude

If the AI gave you a file ending in .md, Docs opens it. Google's page lists two ways: in Docs, File > Open > Upload; or upload the file to Google Drive, right-click it and choose Open with > Google Docs. The headings and bold convert on the way in. What the file is and what else opens it: How to open an .md file.

Download it as Word or PDF

File > Download, then pick the type. Microsoft Word (.docx) gives you a file for someone who will keep editing; PDF Document (.pdf) for something that should not change. For a very long document, Google suggests File > Print and choosing Save as PDF as the destination in Chrome.

Going the other way, into ChatGPT, is on the same menu: Copy as Markdown on a selection, or File > Download > Markdown (.md) for the whole document. Markdown is the format these tools read best, so a question about an existing document gets a better answer this way than from a pasted Word file.

The app we are building for this

For people who would rather not upload the file anywhere: AsItIs opens the file ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot saved, on your own computer, and shows it as a clean document. Fix what you want, everything else stays exactly as it was, then export a PDF or Word file. Mac and Windows, not out yet; the waitlist is open.

Questions

Does Google Docs support markdown?

Yes. Google's help page lists four features: Paste from Markdown and Copy as Markdown in the right-click menu, Enable Markdown under Tools and Preferences so symbols you type convert as you go, and File, Download, Markdown (.md) to export. It converts bold, italics, strikethrough, links and headings.

How do I paste ChatGPT into Google Docs without the asterisks?

Right-click where you want the text and choose Paste from Markdown. The asterisks become bold, the hash marks become headings. If you prefer no formatting at all, paste with Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac) and remove the symbols with Edit, Find and replace.

Can I open a .md file in Google Docs?

Yes. In Docs, go to File, Open, then Upload and choose the file, or upload it to Google Drive, right-click it and pick Open with, Google Docs. Then use File, Download to get a Word file or PDF.

How do I get a ChatGPT table into Google Docs?

Select the table in the chat window with your mouse, copy, and paste into Docs; it arrives as a table. If you only have the version with vertical bars, paste that into Google Sheets, use Data, Split text to columns with a custom separator of a vertical bar, then copy the cells from Sheets into Docs.
