How to open an .md file

ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot saved its work and you have a file called something like report.md. Double-clicking either does nothing or opens a wall of text with # and ** in it. The file is fine. Here is what it is, how to read it on Windows or a Mac, and how to turn it into a Word file or a PDF without installing anything.

Water the pots every evening in July.

What an .md file is

.md is short for markdown. A markdown file is plain text, like a .txt file, with a handful of symbols that stand for formatting: # at the start of a line means a heading, ** around words means bold, - means a bullet, vertical bars draw a table. Programs that understand markdown show the formatting and hide the symbols. Programs that do not show the symbols.

AI tools write in markdown, so when they save a document as a file, this is the format you get. Developers have used it for years for notes and documentation, which is why so many of the pages about it are written for developers. You do not need any of that. Two things matter: you can open it with what you already have, and Google Docs will turn it into a normal document.

Just read it

Windows. Right-click the file, choose Open with, then Notepad. If Notepad is not listed, choose "Choose another app" and find it. You will see the text with its symbols. Read past them; the words are all there.

Mac. Right-click the file (or hold Control and click), choose Open With, then TextEdit. Or open TextEdit first and use File > Open, as Apple's TextEdit guide describes. Pressing the space bar with the file selected in Finder also shows the text in a preview.

If you only want to read the file once, you can stop here. The symbol table in our asterisk guide tells you what each mark meant.

Turn it into Word or PDF

Google Docs reads markdown, and it is free with any Google account.

  1. Go to Google Docs and open a new document. Choose File > Open, then the Upload tab, and choose your .md file. Google's help page lists this route and a second one: upload the file to Google Drive, right-click it and choose Open with > Google Docs.
  2. The document opens with real headings and bold text. Google's list of what converts is bold, italics, strikethrough, links and headings. Tables, if there are any, may need the spreadsheet trick.
  3. Read it and fix anything you want to.
  4. File > Download, then Microsoft Word (.docx) for a file someone will edit, or PDF Document (.pdf) for a file that should stay as it is.

No Google account, or a file you would rather not upload? Open the file in Notepad or TextEdit, select all, copy, and paste into Word. The symbols will still be there; the Word guide shows how to clear them with Find and Replace in about a minute.

On a phone

Most phone file apps show an .md file as plain text when you tap it, symbols and all, which is fine for reading. To make a Word file or PDF from a phone, use the Google Docs app: upload the file to Google Drive, open it with Docs, and share or download from there. The steps are the same as above with smaller buttons.

Sending it back to the AI

Keep the .md file. If you want ChatGPT or Claude to revise the document later, attach the .md rather than a Word file: it is the format they read best, and the headings and structure survive the round trip. Google Docs can give you one from any document with File > Download > Markdown (.md).

The app we are building for this

AsItIs is a Mac and Windows app that opens exactly this file. You double-click the .md and see a clean document with real headings, bold text and tables, on your own computer, with nothing uploaded. You fix what you want, everything else in the file stays exactly as it was, and you export a PDF or Word file. It is not out yet; the waitlist is open, and it is free to open, edit and save, with a plain PDF included.

Questions

What program opens an .md file?

Any text editor: Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on a Mac. Right-click the file, choose Open with, and pick one. You will see the text with symbols such as ** and # in it, which is normal. To see it as a formatted document, upload it to Google Docs, which converts the symbols.

How do I convert an .md file to Word?

In Google Docs choose File, Open, then Upload and pick the file. Docs converts the headings and bold. Then choose File, Download, Microsoft Word (.docx). No installation and no converter website needed.

Why did ChatGPT or Claude give me a .md file?

Markdown is the format these tools write in, so when they save a document as a file, .md is the natural choice. It is plain text, which means any program can open it, but only some programs show the formatting.

Is an .md file safe to open?

It is a text file. Opening it in a text editor runs nothing. As with any file, be careful about links inside it, and be careful if the sender is someone you do not know.
