ChatGPT to Word: paste without the asterisks

You asked ChatGPT for a letter, a plan or a report. You pasted it into Word and got ** around every bold word, ### in front of every heading and a table that is rows of vertical bars. Here is why, the two-minute fix, and how to avoid it next time. Everything below is free and uses Word as it is.

Why the symbols appear

ChatGPT writes in markdown. That is a plain-text way of marking formatting: **bold**, a # before a heading, a - before each bullet, vertical bars to draw a table. The chat window turns those marks into real formatting as it shows them to you, so you never see them there.

When you copy, there can be two versions on the clipboard: the formatted one and the plain one with the symbols. Word takes whichever version the copy gave it. You tend to get the plain version when you use the Copy button on a phone, when you paste into a plain-text box first (a note, an email on your phone, a form) and copy from there, or when ChatGPT gave you a file instead of an answer in the chat.

Paste it again, the right way

  1. In the chat, select the answer with your mouse, from the first word to the last, and press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac). Selecting the text, rather than using the Copy button, gives Word the formatted version.
  2. In Word, press Ctrl+V. A small Paste Options button appears at the end of what you pasted. Microsoft's page on paste formatting says you can click it or press Ctrl to open it.
  3. Choose Merge Formatting. It keeps bold, italics, headings and lists and drops ChatGPT's fonts and colours, so the text matches the rest of your document. Keep Source Formatting keeps everything, including the look of the chat window. Keep Text Only is the one to avoid here: it "discards all formatting and nontext elements", which is exactly how you end up with the symbols.

If every paste comes out wrong, Word may be set to paste as text only. Go to File > Options > Advanced, find "Cut, copy, and paste", and set Pasting from other programs to Merge Formatting.

Already pasted? Clean it in a minute

Use Find and Replace instead of deleting symbols by hand. Press Ctrl+H (on a Mac, Control+H), or go to Home > Editing > Replace.

  1. Find what: **. Replace with: nothing. Replace All. The bold is gone with the asterisks, so select the words that should be bold and press Ctrl+B.
  2. Find what: ### (with the space). Replace with: nothing. Repeat for ## and # . Then put the cursor in each heading line and pick a heading style from the Home tab.
  3. Lines that start with - : select them and click the bullet list button. Word removes the dashes when you apply bullets to lines that start with a dash and a space; if it does not, replace - with nothing first.

Tables

A table copied from the chat window, with its header row, pastes into Word as a real table. If you have the bars-and-dashes version instead (| Class | Room |), Word cannot turn it into a table on its own. The quickest route is through a spreadsheet: paste it into Google Sheets or Excel, split it on the vertical bar, then copy the cells into Word. The steps are in ChatGPT table to Excel or Google Sheets.

Ask ChatGPT for it the way you want it

Two prompts save the clean-up:

  • "Write this as plain text with no markdown: no asterisks, no hash marks, no bullet symbols." You get text that pastes anywhere, and you add the bold and headings yourself.
  • "Put this in a Word document." On some plans ChatGPT makes the file for you. OpenAI's help page on creating documents says it can produce .docx files and that "availability depends on your plan, workspace settings, file type, and surface". If the option is there, download the file and you are done.

To make the first one permanent, add it to your custom instructions (Settings > Personalization). The asterisk guide has the exact wording.

You were given a file, not a chat

If ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot handed you a file that ends in .md, that is markdown saved as a file. Word has no reader for it. Google Docs does: upload the file to Docs and download it as Word. The steps, and what the file is, are in How to open an .md file.

Then save a PDF

Once it looks right in Word: File > Save a Copy (or Save As), choose PDF from the file type list, and save. On a Mac it is File > Save As, then File Format > PDF. Microsoft's page on saving as PDF has the details for each version.

Claude and Copilot

The same copy-and-paste works for an answer in Claude or Copilot: select the text, copy, paste with Merge Formatting. Documents that Claude writes as artifacts have their own Export button, and Claude's help page says documents "export to Word, PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs", so for those you can skip the pasting.

The app we are building for this

AsItIs opens the file ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot saved and shows it as a clean document: real headings, bold text and tables. You fix what you want, everything else stays exactly as it was, and you export a PDF or Word file. It is for Mac and Windows and is not out yet; the waitlist is open.

Questions

Why does ChatGPT text have asterisks and hash marks in it?

ChatGPT writes its answers in markdown, a plain-text way of marking formatting: two asterisks around a word mean bold, a hash mark at the start of a line means a heading, a dash means a bullet. The chat window turns those into real formatting. If you copy the plain version, the symbols come with it.

How do I paste a ChatGPT table into Word?

Select the whole table in the chat window, including its header row, copy it, and paste into Word with Keep Source Formatting or Merge Formatting. Word makes a real table. If you get rows of vertical bars instead, paste into Google Sheets, use Data, then Split text to columns with the vertical bar as the separator, and copy the cells into Word.

Can ChatGPT give me a Word document?

On some plans, yes. OpenAI's help page on creating documents with ChatGPT says it can produce .docx files, and that availability depends on your plan, workspace settings, file type and surface. If the option is there, ask for a Word document and download it. If not, paste into Word and save.

Does Word understand markdown?

No. Word treats the symbols as ordinary text. Google Docs has a Paste from Markdown option that converts them; paste there first, then copy from Docs into Word.
